State Rep. Tony M. McCombie (R-Savanna) is reminding her constituents that now is the time to nominate someone for a Governor’s Hometown Award.

“Governor's Hometown Awards!! The Serve Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service is now accepting applications for the Governor's Hometown Awards,” McCombie posted on Facebook

The State of Illinois’ website for the Governor’s Hometown Awards explains that the “Serve Illinois Commission is a 40-member (25 voting and 15 non-voting), bipartisan board appointed by the governor and administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS).”

In its 15th year, the Governor’s Hometown Awards aims to improve Illinois communities by enhancing volunteerism and instilling an ethic of service throughout the state. Volunteers are continuing to step up to serve unmet needs in their communities and recognition of these community service projects is essential. Interested townships, villages, cities, and counties can apply now for projects that occurred and utilized volunteers in their communities from the period of Jan. 1-Dec. 31, 2022.

Applications can be filled out online. They are due June 16.

In another Facebook post, McCombie reported on her work in Springfield.

"At a press conference yesterday in the state capitol, we gave an update on the legislative session, which was slated to end yesterday, May 19," McCombie posted. "The Legislature, under the control of the Democrat majority, has failed to pass a budget for the new fiscal year, and will require extra time to get the job done. We are here to work, to represent parts of all 102 counties in our state, so bring us to the table. As I stated in inauguration, we have an opportunity with leadership changes to reimagine what we expect from our state government. I asked Speaker Welch to NOT be afraid, to use our knowledge, benefit from our talents. We are problem solvers.”

McCombie was elected to represent the 71st District in 2016. She is a lifelong resident of Savanna, and she earned a Bachelor of Arts from Western Illinois University. She owns and operates Blue Appraisals and is a real estate broker with MelFoster Company. Her previous political experience includes time as the mayor of Savanna, and as a councilwoman on the Savanna City Council.
