House Minority Leader Tony McCombie hosted the Illinois House Republicans’ annual Women to Watch Event at the Capitol, according to an April 23 announcement. The program brings together women from across the state for a day of recognition, celebration, and networking. Each year, House Republican lawmakers select leaders in their communities who are making a difference.
The event featured a panel discussion with McCombie and Iowa Lieutenant Governor Chris Cournoyer. Cournoyer is known for her advocacy of STEM education and efforts to expand hands-on learning opportunities for students. During the discussion, McCombie said that Cournoyer’s passion for education stems from being raised by an engineer and a teacher.
The two leaders spoke about their experiences serving in state legislatures, their paths to leadership roles, and factors that have supported them along the way. In her remarks during the event, McCombie said: “It’s meaningful because it brings incredible women together under one roof, women who are showing up every day and making Illinois stronger, one community at a time.”
She added: “The women at this event are here because of their leadership, commitment, and impact—it matters. It makes a difference. Today is a day to recognize them and say thank you.” Two honorees from McCombie’s district were recognized: Hannah Davekos from Genoa and Caitlin Benes from Kirkland.
McCombie was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 89th House District in 2023 after replacing Andrew Chesney according to Ballotpedia.
Looking ahead, McCombie plans to host another event this summer to honor more leaders in her district.
