Illinois State Representative Brad Fritts announced on May 5 a series of legislative updates, community events, and opportunities for residents in the state’s 74th District. The update comes during what Fritts described as the ‘busy season’ in Springfield, with important deadlines approaching for Senate Bill committees.
The newsletter highlights recent developments at the state capitol, including news that a proposed Constitutional Amendment related to redistricting will not advance in the Senate. “A Constitutional Amendment that would allow Illinois Democrats to tighten their grip on power through more gerrymandering will not move forward in the Senate,” Fritts said. He added, “This is a huge win for fair elections in Illinois. I was a staunch NO vote on this ridiculous power-grab when it was voted on in the House, and I am thankful to my colleagues in the Senate who made the right call on this issue.” The amendment, known as HJRCA 28, would have changed how district boundaries are drawn by deprioritizing compactness among other criteria.
Fritts also outlined upcoming session days: May 5-8 marks the Senate Bill Committee Deadline; additional sessions are scheduled for May 12-15 and May 19-22—the latter being the deadline for third readings of Senate Bills.
Community engagement remains a focus. In April, Ellyn Schoenholz and Marla VanVickle were recognized at Springfield’s Women to Watch Event Conference hosted by Illinois House Republicans. Both women were commended by Fritts as “incredible leaders who continually show up in our community to make it a better place.” VanVickle is noted as founder of Fit2Fight and Schoenholz serves as Vice President of First State Bank in Mendota.
Local initiatives include an upcoming Sharps and Rx Drop-Off Drive scheduled for Thursday, May 14 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Dixon Township Building (315 Highland Avenue). Residents can safely dispose of prescription medications and sharps during this event held with several local partners.
Fritts invited nominations for his Educator of the Year Award open until Monday, May 18 at 5:00 PM. Eligible nominees must work full-time at schools within District 74.
Additional outreach efforts mentioned include Medicare informational events for seniors and participation in Rochelle’s “Hands Around the City” event raising awareness about child abuse across Illinois.
Fritts concluded his update by promoting free museum passes available through his office—allowing admission to participating Chicagoland museums—and encouraged residents to reserve passes online.
Fritts was elected as a Republican representative to serve Illinois’ 74th House District beginning in 2023 after succeeding Dan Swanson, according to Ballotpedia.
