Illinois State Senator Andrew Chesney met with the East Dubuque eighth-grade class during their visit to the Illinois Capitol on May 4. The students were touring the Capitol and also visited the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum as part of their educational trip.
The meeting provided an opportunity for students to learn about state government firsthand. Chesney spoke with them about his role as a state senator, how laws are made, and what it means to represent the 45th District. He also discussed topics such as the state budget and Illinois’ economy, explaining how decisions in Springfield can affect communities like theirs.
Chesney said, “They came prepared and asked thoughtful questions, which is always great to see. It’s encouraging to watch students take an interest in how government works and to help connect what they’re learning in the classroom to the real world.”
Chesney was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 45th Senate District in 2023, succeeding Brian Stewart according to public records.
The visit aimed to bridge classroom learning with practical insights into state governance. Such experiences are intended to inspire civic engagement among young people.
