Chairman, member resign from Whiteside airport board

Approximately a week after a government oversight group questioned the cost and need for hiring an outside attorney to do the work of the Whiteside County state's attorney, Chairman Stan Domack and John Zaeske resigned from the Whiteside County Airport Board, the group reported on Wednesday.

The Edgar County Watchdogs (ECW) reported last fall when it was revealed that the board appeared to have hired an attorney on its own, despite its obligation to use the state's attorney. The ECW also said the board had enlisted another legal firm to respond to an Open Meetings Act request. Both instances were a waste of taxpayer money, the ECW argued.

More recently, Domack responded to a citizen's question about a measure not being properly entered on the board's agenda by seeming to dismiss the rules governing public meetings.

“Let’s shut the airport down, and let these people go home," he said in a video posted on the ECW's Illinois Leaks website. "We’ll just shut the airport down, and say that’s the end of it. Rules and regulations are a bunch of crap… .”

Domack, who has been on the board for 30 years, told SaukValley.com, an online news source, that he was resigning due to health concerns and the recent death of his wife.

According to SaukValley.com, the board’s attorney has held the post for 40 years and now lives in Florida, attending board meetings via conference call and earning approximately $17,000 a year for his services.
