Voters handed Republican candidate Andrew Chesney a primary win in his bid to be GOP nominee in the race to fill the 89th District's House seat.

Chesney, who is vying for the House seat currently held by Republican Rep. Brian Stewart, who will be vacating his position to run for an Illinois Senate seat, has so far earned a 980 vote lead with 53.59 percent of the vote over his opponent Steve Fricke.

Chesney's campaign focused on bipartisanship, as he pointed to his government service as an alderman in Freeport.

"Bipartisan legislation and cooperation does exist in Springfield," Chesney stated in a Journal Standard candidate questionnaire.   "Despite differences between the Democrats and Republicans, there are some areas of agreement, and I will work to focus on those things that unite us rather than those that divide us."

Chesney, a division sales manager with Seaga Manufacturing,  serves as the chair of the Stephenson County Republican Central Committee and is an elected member of the Freeport City Council.

“We’ve made great strides over the past two years in changing how Freeport’s government operates,” he stated in his September 2017 campaign announcement news release. “It’s that same commitment to change, progress and working together to solve problems that I want to take with me to Springfield."

The 89th District includes sections of Carroll, Jo Daviess, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties.
