Carroll County issued the following announcement on Sept. 14.
Northwestern Illinois citizens and businesses are invited to participate in the upcoming hazardous waste,
recycling and paper shred event collection set for Saturday, September 29, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The event
will be conducted at the Savanna Shopko Hometown Store west parking lot entrance, which is west of Main
Street (Rt. 84) and south of downtown Savanna, IL.
Several categories collected at the event include fees to cover a portion of recycling processing and transfer
expense.
The household hazardous waste (HHW) fee is $10 per participating household. Items accepted include oilbased
paints and thinners; aerosol paints; household chemical and drain cleaners; old motor oil, antifreeze,
gasoline and kerosene; driveway sealers; lawn chemicals and pesticides; adhesives; mercury thermometers
and thermostats. Items not accepted under HHW include explosives, agricultural chemicals, latex paint and
business wastes.
Latex paints are not considered a hazardous waste but will also be accepted for a recycling fee costing $2.50
for a quart container, $4.00 for a gallon container, $6.00 for a two gallon container and $11 for a five gallon
container.
Paper shredding is being offered on-site with a $2.00 per household participation fee. There is no limit on
paper quantities.
Certain electronics will be collected for a $25 fee per item and include computer monitors/screens, laptops,
and televisions of any type. Large household appliances will be accepted for $10 per item and include
refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, stoves, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, microwaves, etc.
Compact and large fluorescent bulbs will also be accepted for a charge with CFL bulbs costing $0.25 each and
larger bulbs including tubes costing $1.00 each.
Free recycling categories include most small electronic items such as desktop computer towers (no screens),
VCRs, DVD players, printers, keyboards, mice, cords, cables, phones, radios, speakers, copiers, and cell phones.
Small household appliances are also accepted at no charge and include vacuum cleaners, coffee and bread
makers, toaster ovens, small saws, drills, holiday lights, hair dryers and more.
Batteries are also accepted for free and include all types of alkaline, lithium, rechargeable, and large lead-acid
vehicle and machinery batteries. Unwanted medicines and pharmaceuticals will also be collected for free.
Small and large metal items are eligible for drop off for free including bicycles, swing sets, metal shelving,
metal cabinets, lawn and garden tractors, lawn mowers, weed trimmers, snow blowers, metal patio furniture,
outdoor grills, metal bed frames, steel posts, metal fencing, and more.
The recycling event is under the cooperation of the City of Savanna and the Jo-Carroll Solid Waste Agency. For
