City of Galena Grant Park Committee met September 21.

Here is the minutes provided by the committee:

Call To Order:

Chairperson, Charles Marsden called the meeting to order at 10:05 a.m. at City Hall, 101 Green Street.

Roll Call:

Upon roll call the following members were present: Jackson, Marsden, Moran and Robb

Absent: Greiner, Greibe, Holland, Miller and Smith

Establishment Of Quorum:

Chairperson Marsden announced that there was no quorum of Committee members present. No business will be conducted. Discussion for information purposes only.

New Business:

Minutes; Minutes of the August 17, 2018 meeting were tabled.

Public Comment: George Petitgout from the VFW presented a $3,500 check to The Galena Foundation for work in the park. A check presentation ceremony in the park will be scheduled.

Discussion: Inspirational Items discussed were the ongoing work on the Oval Garden and the Van Buren Street entrance as well as the Johnson Street entrance.

Discussion: Ken Robb gave an update on the Fundraising Plan from The Galena Foundation.

Discussion: Marsden previously prepared a cashflow model to coincide with the fundraising plan. No changes to the spreadsheet have been made, awaiting final prices on the Oval Garden and the work on the entrances. It is hoped that the update can be made for the next meeting.

Discussion: Discussion took place on the plaques. Ken has worked on improving the design and layout, assisted by Wendi Dibbern.

Discussion: Discussion took place regarding the Oval Garden and park entrances. We are planning on doing Kohlsaat Bridge entrance after Country Fair based on quote from Bobby Hahn. Should also do Jackson Street entrance while we are at it since that was also scheduled for 2018 and funds should be available.

Discussion: Discussion took place regarding the Short Term and Long Term Projects List:

• Maybe some ongoing tree work around Oval Garden and routine pruning by Public Works.

• Public Works still needs to do French drain, water pit, etc.

• Rock Garden should be cleaned out and filled with compost this year. Plant it next spring according to David Greibe’s plan.

• Plant urns by pavilion prior to Country Fair

• Handicap Access to be done after Country Fair

• Marsden to investigate low maintenance plantings for embankment this winter with help from David Greibe and input from landscape architect doing the Stillman grounds. Stillman is proposed to be planted in a low height fescue like it was in the 1800’s.

• Marsden and Moran to investigate grant moneys for the restoration of Johnson Street.

• Plant maintenance contract will be expanded in 2019.

Discussion: Marketing and Communications items involving the centerpiece plaques were discussed.

Committee Member Comments: None.

Scheduling Of Next Meeting: October 19, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at City Hall

Adjourn: The meeting adjourned at 11:00 a.m.
