The price of local government in 2016: Lee County

The Lee County budget was $23.75 million for its 2016 fiscal year.

That's an increase of 0.5 percent from 2015, when the county spent $23.62 million.

Lee County has a population of 34,584.

Since 2001, the Lee County budget has grown by 32.8 percent, from $17.88 million. The county population has fallen 3.9 percent over the same period, from 36,000.

Salaries accounted for 33.3 percent of county spending in 2016. Lee County property taxpayers paid $7.90 million for 139 full-time employees and 36 part-time employees.

In 2001, the county had 142 full-time employees and 78 part-time employees, and spent $7.11 million.
