Illinois State House District 89 issued the following announcement on Nov. 29.

As Democrat Legislator Arroyo Arraigned on Bribery Charges, Rep. Chesney joins call for Ethics Reform

State Representative Andrew Chesney joined his colleagues in co-sponsoring legislation to create an Ethics Reform Task Force to assess current laws, study best practices, and propose legislation to ensure Illinois has among the most stringent ethics laws in the nation.

“This must end now. The drip drip of corruption in state government must be dropped,” Chesney reacted to the arraignment on Monday morning of Democrat State Representative Luis Arroyo (D-Chicago). “I am proud to co-sponsor Rep. McCombie’s Task Force legislation and also join my Leader, Jim Durkin, in calling for Rep. Arroyo’s removal from office as the legislature had to do previously with several democrat legislators.

House Joint Resolution 87 was filed by State Representative Tony McCombie last week to create the State Ethics Task Force in leadup to the Fall Veto Session. Rep. Chesney is a co-sponsor among other reform-minded Republicans and Democrats.

“Illinois taxpayers are sick and tired of corruption. There is no time in recent history when more active investigations were going on regarding untoward actions of elected officials in Illinois,” Chesney continued. “This is not only an issue of good public policy, but speaks to the trust of Illinois citizens in their government officials. I will not allow fear to guide my actions, but, rather, faith that we can and must do better.”

The Task Force will be comprised of nine members: Member of the Governor’s Staff or the Lt. Governor and two legislative members appointed by each caucus leader. The Task Force has a limited time frame to accomplish its work, with findings and a final report recommending legislative changes to the Governor and General Assembly due within ninety days following passage of this joint resolution.
