CGH MEDICAL CENTER: COVID-19 and Your Pets: What You Should Know

Doghug

C.G.H. Medical Center issued the following announcement on April 24.

The news that a tiger at the Bronx Zoo has tested positive for the novel coronavirus might have you wondering: Could my pet infect me? Could I infect my pet?

These are good questions. After all, the virus is believed to be linked to a live animal market in China. And there are reports of a very small number of pet dogs and cats in both the U.S. and China testing positive for the virus. These pets were in close contact with people who had COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.

Will my dog or cat get me sick?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the risk of animals spreading the virus to people is considered to be low. Still, CDC is urging that you treat pets as you would other human members of your family to prevent potential infection. This includes:

Not letting pets interact with people or other animals outside your household.

Keeping cats indoors when possible so that they don't interact with other animals or people.

Walking dogs on a leash—and staying at least 6 feet away from other people and animals.

Avoiding dog parks or other public places where a large number of people and dogs gather.

If you become sick with COVID-19:

Have another person in your household take care of your pet while you're sick.

Avoid close contact with your pet. This includes petting, snuggling and being licked by your pet.

Don't share food with your pet. And don't share your bed with your pet.

If you must care for your pet or be around animals while you're sick, wash your hands before and after contact with them, and wear a cloth face covering.
