The officials and employees at the Exelon's Byron Generating Station raised over $35,000 for local food pantries.
The station's mission was to help the many families that have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.
WFIR Channel 23 reports they surpassed their goal of raising $25,000. Half of the donations went to Northern Illinois Food Bank, while others went toward military charity support resources, resources targeting nuclear power education, and donations toward employee goodwill.
“Our essential workforce continues to safely generate carbon-free electricity for the region," Byron Generating Station Mark Kanavos said. WFIR Channel 23. "But after seeing local job losses and a weakening economy, our employees wanted to do something positive for the region and beyond. We all know someone affected in some way by the coronavirus pandemic. Helping to fill food pantry shelves is just one way we can assist in this time of need.”
