Byron Forest Preserve District issued the following announcement on June 25.
it's our mission statement and what we strive for on a daily basis. While we always think about education and recreation, we oftentimes forget about preservation. Here's a list of things our team does to preserve our open spaces and natural resources on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis.
Over 2,100 Acres of Preserves
Including dolomite tallgrass prairies, gravel hill prairies, sand prairies and prairie remnants, oak-hickory forests, oak savannas, and wetlands
447 Acres of Dedicated Nature Preserve
Protecting high-quality natural areas, in perpetuity, through dedication into the nationally acclaimed Illinois Nature Preserves System
Protecting Our Natural Heritage
Our preserves are home to 568 species of plants, including 2 federally endangered and 8 state endangered species
Restoring and Managing the Land
We carry out prescribed burns, remove invasive species, collect seed, propagate and plant seedlings, and work to restore rare and vital habitats
Protecting Pollinators
Our preserves are home to hundreds of species of wild bees, butterflies, moths, and other insects
Teaching Stewardship
Programs, classes, events, and field trips help others understand the importance of protecting the natural world that we all share
