Illinois' Tolling 2020 tolling reform package is now providing huge savings on the costs motorists incur when tolls are not paid.
The reform also offers significant reductions for older fines and establishes a grace period for unpaid tolls assessed from March 9 to June 25 during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We have a remarkable tolling system, but changes were long overdue with regard to unpaid tolls,” Illinois Tollway Executive Director José Alvarez said in a release issued on Illinois Tollway.
Under the old rules, motorists had to pay a $20 fine for unpaid tolls, which increased to $50 if left unpaid for another 60 days. Under the new rules, motorists will receive a $15 invoice fee and a bill for the unpaid tolls, and they’ll have 60 days to pay before the fees go up. Also, all existing $20 and $50 fines have been lowered to $3 per toll through the end of the year.
“Pursuing hefty violations is a costly process, and both the Tollway and customers are better served by providing as much opportunity as possible for customers to pay their tolls,” Alvarez said in the release. “That’s why we’re resetting the clock for all outstanding violations as well, to bring them in line with the new rules, and thanks to the board of directors, anyone who has unpaid fines will realize significant savings if they pay by the end of the year.”
