Recently reactivated after a decade, the McConnell American Legion Ladies Auxiliary is working on gathering donations for holiday packages to be sent to military service members overseas.
Donations will be being accepted at the American Legion at 203 Maine St. in McConnell from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 21, according to the Journal Standard. The auxiliary is seeking items such as socks, soap, toothpaste, non-aerosol deodorant, lip balm, baby wipes, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, pain-relieving topical cream, Vicks VapoRub, hand warmers, sewing kits, lens cleaner cloths, reading materials, board games, puzzles, AA/AAA batteries, wall hooks, water flavoring packets, gum, beef jerky, protein powder, and letters.
Barb Stewart began working to bring back the auxiliary this past summer and tracked down past members and also recruited new ones, such as Nikki and Cali Diddens.
"Being an active auxiliary again, we want to create awareness for our active duty members," Nikki Diddens said. "We think about them. We think about their families, who also miss them, and we want the families to also know that many do care."
More information about the auxiliary can be found on its website.
