The Illinois General Assembly is considering the approval of two Firearm Owner Identification-related bills, Senate Bill 1165 and the Gun Violence Prevention PAC's bill.
While one proposal hopes to reform the card acquisition system to prevent illegal ownership, the other hopes to streamline the card application process.
"The problem still remains that it is not fixing the root problem, which is why I believe we need to talk about my repeal of the FOID legislation," Sen. Neil Anderson (R-Moline). "The FOID card is a blatant assault on people’s Second Amendment Right to protect themselves and to keep and bear arms."
The Block Illegal Ownership and FOID fix bill (BIO bill), established by Gun Violence PAC, will enforce background checks and fingerprints for all gun sales. In addition to mental health funding, guns may be removed from an owner’s possession if a FOID card is revoked under the legislation if passed. Cardholders are required to present a copy of a renewal application as the 18-month extension continues to aid them.
The number of FOID card applications has spiked amid the pandemic, with 19,954 applications and 14,847 renewals recorded last month. WIth persistent backlogs and delays, Senate Bill 1165 was made to aid the general application system.
