Gov. J.B. Pritzker has signed off on a bill that grants the Village of Dunlap total control of an unused and impassable portion of the Rock Island Trail.
Sponsored by state Sen. Will Stoller (R-Germantown), Senate Bill 84 opens the door for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to make the transfer. Village officials have already indicated they plan to take advantage of the opportunity by enhancing accessibility and recreational amenities.
“The Rock Island Trail is a popular destination point for outdoor enthusiasts throughout the state and even the nation,” Stoller said in a press release posted to his website. “The signing of this bill will help improve the experience for everyone who uses the trail, and more importantly it will improve safety.”
Presently, anyone looking to make use of the trail in the Dunlap area is required to use village streets, which Stoller describes as being dangerous to both pedestrians and motorists.
Governor J.B. Pritzker officially signed the legislation into law on Aug. 6.
