Sen. Brian Stewart spends a day celebrating the 105th birthday of a Freeport woman.
As a state Senator, much of Stewart's time is spent on Senate business, but that doesn't mean he doesn't get to enjoy community celebrations. On May 3, he joined the Freeport community in celebrating resident Elva Piehn, who turned 105 that day.
"Serving in the Illinois Senate you certainly get to meet many great people from all walks of life. However, it's not very often you get this privilege. This evening I had the distinct honor in attending this young lady's birthday celebration. Happy Birthday today to Elva Piehn who is 105 !! And yes she told me her secret to longevity," said Stewart.
Stewart presented Mrs. Piehn with a certificate of recognition from the 102nd General Assembly State Senate, in honor of her birthday.
In 2011, Mrs. Piehn was honored by the Plymouth Area Clothes Closet for "more than 10 years of volunteering with the weekly "Meals for Many," the free Thursday evening buffet dinners sponsored by Community Closet and served at Plymouth Congregational Church."
In 2021, the Plymouth United Church of Christ celebrated Mrs. Piehn's 104th birthday, noting that she was a member of the church from 2001-2015 and was well known for her baking - particularly peanut brittle.
