Join University of Illinois Extension as they hold various gardening related programs in a series being offered this fall. Costs for each program are varied and listed below. All programs will begin at 1:30 p.m. and be held at the Jo Daviess County Extension Office, 204 Vine St. Elizabeth, IL 61028. On Thursday, August 11, University of Illinois Extension Local Foods and Small Farms Educator Grant McCarty will present “Cool Season Vegetables”. Grant will discuss cool season vegetables and how to get the most out of your garden heading into the cooler months of fall. Topics that will be addressed during this educational program include planting, varieties, season extension, pest management, and harvest of cool season vegetables. The cost for this program will be $5.
On Thursday, August 25, University of Illinois Extension Program Coordinator Nikki Keltner will present “Centerpieces from the Garden”. Nikki will demonstrate how to take fresh cut flowers from the garden and make a beautiful centerpiece. Resources on cut flower care and helpful tools will be discussed along with information about what garden flowers make the best cut flowers. Following the discussion and demonstration, participants will get to make a centerpiece that they can take home with them. The cost for this program will be $15.
On Thursday, September 8, University of Illinois Extension Natural Resources, Energy, and Environment Educator Jay Solomon will present “Composting for the Homeowner”. Jay will discuss how to make different types of composting systems and which ones may best fit what you are looking for. He will also show participants the composting system he set up at the Jo Daviess County Extension Office. The cost for this program will be $5.
On Tuesday, September 20, University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener Volunteers Laurie Zueger and Linda Helgeson will present “Grapevine Wreaths”. Laurie and Linda will show participants a few different things they can do with the grapevines they see growing around their property. Each participant will get to make a wreath to take home with them. The cost for this program will be $15.
On Thursday, October 13, University of Illinois Extension Local Foods and Small Farms Educator Grant McCarty will present “Falling Into the Autumn Vegetable Garden”. Grant will discuss the things you can do this fall to help prepare your garden better for next spring. The cost for this program will be $5.
The Jo Daviess County Master Gardeners are also hoping to host a garden walk for people to come tour the gardens and learn about what they have planted at the Jo Daviess County Extension Office. Look for more information to come on this event!
