Time to plant Cool Season Vegetables

18

As the summer winds down, it is time to plant cool season vegetables. Join University of Illinois Extension Local Foods and Small Farms Educator Grant McCarty for “Cool Season Vegetables” on Thursday, August 11 beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Jo Daviess County Extension Office, 204 Vine St. Elizabeth, IL 61028. There will be a $5 fee to attend this program and preregistration is requested. To register or for more information visit us online at go.illinois.edu/jsw or call us at 815-858-2273.

“Based on our climate, we have a tight window to get these vegetables planted and growing before the first frost,” states Grant McCarty, Local Foods and Small Farms Educator. “Most of August is ideal to sow seeds or plant transplants as the warm soil and weather is needed for establishment. If you wait until September, it can be too late”

Topics that will be addressed during this educational program include planting, starting, different varieties, season extension, pest management, and harvest of cool season vegetables.

If you need a reasonable accommodation to attend this program please contact the Extension Office at 815-858-2273. Early requests are strongly encouraged to give sufficient time to meet your needs.
