State Rep. Tony McCombie (R-Savanna) is honoring women for National Women’s History Month, recognizing “exceptional women in our community” who make a difference across the state.
According to her official website, two women in her district will be chosen and invited to Springfield for a special women’s recognition event on April 18.
McCombie took to social media to ask people to make nominations that are due April 1. Nominations can be sent to McCombie’s District Office through email at McCombie@ilhousegop.org. The email should include name, relation to the person being nominated, the nominee’s name and contact information, and a description of why she is being nominated. She asks that people use the subject line: “Women’s Recognition Event.”
“It’s national women’s history month and to honor that, I am going to recognize exceptional women in our community who have gone above and beyond to make a difference in our state,” McCombie said on Facebook. “I know we have an amazing network of women who are working hard every day to make positive change; the goal of this event is to not only recognize that, but celebrate it.”
According to Enjoy Illinois, Women’s History Month began when Congress requested that President Ronald Reagan declare the week beginning March 7, 1982, as Women’s History Week. In 1987, the National Women’s History Alliance petitioned Congress to designate March as Women’s History Month.
According to the Illinois Department of Central Management Services, there are a number of events taking place to honor important women. Events feature “women trailblazers who are leaders of industry, ranging from academia, financial institutions, hospitality, government, manufacturing, non-profits, and telecommunications.” Events are free to the public with information found on the DCEO website.
A virtual panel discussion entitled, “Empowering HER with Resources: How Illinois Supports Women-Owned Businesses,” will take place on March 23 from 11 a.m. to noon.
The event will focus on free resources to help support business owners, including one-on-one business advising, business education programs and online business directories.
It will be moderated by Valerie Werpetinski, who is the associate director of Entrepreneurial Education at the University of Illinois Gies College of Business.
A list of events can be found at the Illinois Department of Central Management Services website.
