State Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) recently participated in a public safety discussion with over 75 law enforcement officials in Northwest Illinois. The event, held in Freeport, brought together police chiefs, sheriffs, and officers from various departments, as well as representatives from the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Senator Chesney emphasized the importance of regularly connecting with law enforcement leaders to understand the challenges they face in their daily work. He stated, "These are the men and women who are charged with keeping our communities safe, so it is vital we receive their feedback and thoughtfully consider their suggestions."

During the discussion, Senator Chesney and other Statehouse elected officials provided an update on recent and pending legislation related to public safety and criminal justice. However, the majority of the time was dedicated to hearing from the law enforcement leaders themselves.

One significant concern raised by law enforcement officials was the impact of the SAFE-T Act on keeping violent offenders behind bars. Senator Chesney expressed his understanding, stating, "Law enforcement officials are doing their best to abide by the mandates within the SAFE-T Act, but many remain concerned about the ability to keep some violent offenders behind bars once they are arrested." He further criticized the current criminal justice system, referring to it as a "turnstile brand" that allows criminals to re-offend after being released.

Additionally, the discussion focused on the challenges of officer retention and recruitment, as well as the overall sentiment towards law enforcement. Senator Chesney acknowledged these concerns, stating, "It is clear we must continue to push back against anti-police rhetoric and the anti-police public policies that have been pushed by Democrats who place the rights of criminals over the rights of crime victims and Illinois families."

Senator Chesney emphasized the need for collaboration with law enforcement partners to ensure they have the necessary tools to carry out their duties effectively. He added, "Every Illinoisan has the right to feel safe in their home and in their community, and we need to be working collaboratively with our partners in law enforcement to make sure they have the tools they need to do their job. We also must make sure our first responders know we have their backs and will never stop fighting for them."

The public safety discussion provided an opportunity for Senator Chesney and other lawmakers to engage directly with law enforcement officials and address their concerns. By listening to their feedback and advocating for their needs, Senator Chesney aims to support the efforts of law enforcement in keeping communities safe.
