As Illinois and the nation grapple with a law enforcement shortage, Chris Bishop, a candidate for the Illinois State Senate's 37th District, has highlighted efforts by the City of Sterling, which is seeking to hire new police officers. The city's recruitment efforts come at a time when attracting and retaining law enforcement personnel presents significant challenges across the state.
“Looking for a new career? This sounds like a great opportunity!” Bishop said on Facebook.
Bishop drew attention to an announcement made by the City of Sterling which emphasized their search for police officers.
The announcement stated that they were "looking for new officers to join our team," including individuals willing to give "behind the ear cuddles, belly rubs and sneak her some treats." Interested applicants were guided to apply through their website or scan a provided barcode. The deadline for applications was specified as Friday, Dec. 8 at 4:00 p.m.
These recruitment strategies by the City of Sterling come during a time of notable difficulty in recruiting and retaining officers in Illinois. A survey conducted by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police in February 2022 highlighted these challenges as significant hurdles faced by law enforcement agencies across the state. From 2020 to 2021, there was an alarming surge of resignations (up by 65%), along with an increase in retirements (7%), prompting some departments to seek experienced officers from neighboring counties. These statistics underscored an ongoing issue faced not only by Illinois but also nationally - that of a law enforcement shortage.
The 37th State Senate District which includes counties such as Lee, Bureau, Henry, DeKalb, Ogle amongst others is currently represented by State Sen. Win Stoller (R-Germantown Hills). Stoller had announced his decision in August not to seek a third term leaving room for new candidates like Chris Bishop.
