Today, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), along with House Minority Leader Tony McCombie and other local officials, announced the completion of the reconstruction project on U.S. 20/Illinois 84 (Spring Street) in Galena. The project took place over three construction seasons and involved modernizing a key section between Main Street and Gear Street.
The purpose of this infrastructure improvement was to enhance safety, mitigate flooding risks, and preserve the historical character of Galena's main thoroughfare. House Minority Leader Tony McCombie emphasized the importance of such projects for regional development: “Improving infrastructure in Northwest Illinois is vital to helping our communities and region thrive,” she stated. “This project addresses critical infrastructure and safety concerns, enhancing the quality of life for residents and supporting local businesses, which will drive further economic growth.”
Galena is known for its historic sites and attracts over a million visitors annually. The upgraded roadway is anticipated to bolster the local economy by supporting nearly 1,600 jobs and generating $1.8 million for the area.
