With another push for a progressive income tax in Illinois, House Minority Leader Tony McCombie has voiced his concerns. In a statement released on October 24, 2024, McCombie criticized the Democrats' approach to taxation.

"The default position for Democrats is to raise taxes," he stated. Reflecting on past efforts, he noted that "four years ago they failed to fool voters into passing an extreme income tax hike." He highlighted the worries of current voters who are "concerned about the high cost of living and unfriendly business climate in the state."

McCombie attributed these issues to what he described as "the Democrats’ own tax-and-spend schemes and consistent refusal to pursue any meaningful reforms." He concluded by asserting that "the last thing voters want is another tax increase."
