Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie has introduced a legislative package aimed at amending the state's Environmental Protection Act. This move seeks to address the impending deadlines for coal and natural gas-fired power plant closures, as mandated by current law.

Under legislation enacted in 2021, all such plants are required to shut down by 2045. Additionally, restrictions on gas-fired facilities will begin in 2030 under the Climate & Equitable Jobs Act. With these deadlines approaching and energy demands rising, McCombie argues that it is crucial to reassess these timelines and explore new solutions.

"We must take a realistic approach to the future of energy in Illinois," said Leader McCombie. "This is a complex issue that requires stakeholders and lawmakers to engage in ongoing dialogue about how well we are meeting existing deadlines, given current energy demands and the unattainable goals for 'clean energy.' The reality is that our energy demands are rising while we push to close coal and natural gas plants. My bills aim to foster this crucial conversation and position our state for success by ensuring a steady, reliable power supply."

The proposed legislation is now awaiting further consideration in the Illinois House of Representatives.
