Thanksgiving is a significant national holiday in the United States, observed this year on Thursday, November 28, 2024. Its roots trace back to 1621 when the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony and the Wampanoag people shared an autumn harvest feast. This event is acknowledged as one of the earliest Thanksgiving celebrations in American history.
The Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth in December 1620 and faced severe hardships. The harsh winter that followed claimed nearly half their community due to lack of food and freezing conditions. By spring, the Wampanoag people, led by Chief Massasoit with interpreter Squanto's help, offered their assistance to the settlers. They taught them essential skills in farming, hunting, and fishing, which ensured their survival. This cooperation resulted in a three-day feast featuring wild game, seafood, corn, squash, and other local produce. This first Thanksgiving represented a moment of harmony between two cultures.
Though Thanksgiving celebrations occurred sporadically across various colonies afterward, it was not until President George Washington’s proclamation in 1789 that a national day of thanks was formally observed.
Today’s Thanksgiving encourages reflection on life's blessings: family, friends, health, and the freedom to gather and give thanks. House Minority Leader Tony McCombie extends warm wishes to Illinois residents today: it is a time to cherish connections and extend kindness and generosity to those in need.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
