In the closing moments of the Illinois House of Representatives' 2024 Veto Session, a motion by House Republican Floor Leader Patrick Windhorst to adjourn "sine die" was rejected by House Democrats. The term "sine die" refers to adjourning without setting a date to reconvene. This decision allows the 103rd General Assembly to meet again in early January for what is known as a "lame duck session."
A lame duck session occurs after a new General Assembly has been elected but before its members are sworn in. During this time, outgoing legislators can continue their duties despite having no obligation to serve their constituents' interests or fulfill pre-election promises. In these sessions, bills can pass with only a simple majority rather than the supermajority required during regular sessions.
Critics argue that lame duck sessions allow outgoing legislators to pass contentious bills without accountability. State Democrats have used this opportunity to push through significant legislation with minimal deliberation.
The upcoming lame duck session from January 4th to 7th may see numerous bills filed or passed quickly, especially given Illinois's estimated $3 billion budget deficit. High-ranking Democrats aim to counteract potential policies from the President-elect by introducing progressive legislation during this period.
As of now, two days into the scheduled session, no major actions have been taken. A statement was released expressing dissatisfaction with the current situation: “The buck stops with the leader…the speaker: we won’t be subject to the mismanagement and chaos of his own making. We are here on the taxpayers dime and it is an expensive waste.”
In other news, firearm deer season numbers for fall 2024 show an increase of 8% from last year, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). A total of 82,496 deer were reported taken during two weekends of hunting season.
Additionally, a recent blood drive in Savanna exceeded expectations by collecting 38 units, potentially saving up to 114 lives.
Looking ahead, there will be a teletownhall hosted tonight by State Representative Brad Fritts and another representative. The inauguration for the 104th General Assembly is set for January 8th.
Leader McCombie plans a district tour starting January 13th for constituents in the 89th District to engage with her on legislative issues.
