On January 8, the 104th General Assembly of Illinois was inaugurated, marking a new chapter for the state's legislative body. Among those sworn in were two new Republican representatives, Regan Deering and Kyle Moore. "As they step into their new roles, they bring fresh energy, unique experiences, and a commitment to serve their communities," stated Leader McCombie.

Leader McCombie outlined her priorities for the term, focusing on economic growth, reducing unnecessary spending, and opposing tax increases. She emphasized these as essential steps towards prosperity in Illinois.

The Illinois House recently renewed its procedural rules for two more years. The rules were drafted by the Democrat supermajority without input from Republicans. Deputy Leader Ryan Spain argued for greater transparency during the debate over these rules.

Concerns have been raised about the power these rules give to the Speaker of the House. "The Rules are designed to give ultimate authority to the Speaker of the House instead of the legislative body," said Leader McCombie. Emanuel “Chris” Welch continues as Speaker despite earlier promises of change.

The 103rd General Assembly concluded without addressing several key issues such as budget deficits and rising crime rates. Criticism was directed at Democratic leaders for a session that lacked substantial content.

In cannabis-related news, Speaker Welch did not advance a bill regulating intoxicating hemp products like Delta-8 during the final hours of the lame duck session. "Republicans are ready to ensure public safety, protect children, and support responsible business practices," stated Leader McCombie following this decision.

Meanwhile, voting has commenced on ten potential designs for a new state flag of Illinois. These designs were selected from nearly 5,000 submissions by the public.

Leader McCombie also announced her district tour beginning January 13 across northwest Illinois to engage with constituents directly.

Finally, there is a call from some quarters to repeal the Illinois TRUST Act which designates Illinois as a sanctuary state for undocumented immigrants due to concerns over costs related to services provided to them.
