House Minority Leader Tony McCombie has expressed support for State Representative Charlie Meier, who is set to begin cancer treatment. In a statement, McCombie thanked Meier for his leadership and added, “Praying for you Charlie as you take the time to heal your body and mind.”

Representative Meier will not be part of McCombie’s House Republican Leadership team this term due to his health condition. He shared a letter with his constituents about his diagnosis and treatment plan, encouraging them to prioritize routine health check-ups.

“Late last year, during an annual routine blood test, I learned I share a bond with millions of Americans. I have cancer of the prostate. I was surprised when I received word from the doctor because I’ve always gotten back a clean bill of health. This time is different. I am going to start radiation immediately at St. Elizabeth’s in O’Fallon. My treatment will take at least 28 days. The good news is that this type of cancer is very treatable,” Meier wrote.

He emphasized transparency in sharing his health status and reassured constituents of his commitment to continue representing Bond, Clinton, Madison, St. Clair, and Washington counties. “With the benefit of outstanding doctors, early detection, and the support of so many friends and family, I plan to get through this and keep fighting for you in Springfield," he stated.

Meier has decided to step down from his leadership role within the House Republicans to focus on his health and serving the people of the 109th district.
