A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Carroll County Sheriff's office in Illinois on February 18, 2025. The request was made by NW Illinois News, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In our pursuit of transparency and accountability, we requested records showing persons committed to the facility that have had an Immigration Detainer issued by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency lodged against them since January 29, 2024.
Additionally, we sought information about requests from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security regarding civil enforcement, which are reportable under the TRUST Act and/or the Illinois VOICES Act. We also asked for copies of Immigration Detainers received from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that fall under these same laws.
As a member of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization that assists news media companies in investigating state and federal governmental agencies, we believe access to public records is essential for fulfilling our professional responsibilities. This includes holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
We anticipate this information will provide valuable insights into immigration enforcement within our local community and contribute to ongoing conversations about immigration policy at both state and national levels.
