Governor J.B. Pritzker has proposed a new state budget for Illinois, marking the largest in its history. During his address to the Illinois General Assembly, he announced a spending plan totaling $55.235 billion for fiscal year 2026. This represents an increase of nearly $2 billion over the previous year and an overall rise of 3.7%. The Governor's proposal relies on projected revenue that has not yet been confirmed by the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability (CGFA), along with increased taxes and other financial strategies requiring legislative approval.

Since Governor Pritzker assumed office in 2019, state expenditures have risen significantly from $40.3 billion to the current proposal, which is $15 billion higher than when he began his tenure. In response to this budget announcement, Leader McCombie stated at a Capitol press conference that the plan was "dead on arrival." She emphasized that "Illinois families deserve an honest and transparent government – not one that increases spending by $2 billion and masks a $3.2 billion deficit on paper."

The CGFA provided lawmakers with an economic forecast indicating Illinois' underperformance compared to other U.S. states in terms of economic growth, job creation, and unemployment reduction over two decades. These findings contrast with the optimistic projections included in Governor Pritzker's budget proposal.

In transportation news, Illinois residents are reminded about the upcoming implementation of REAL ID requirements set for May 7, 2025. The Department of Homeland Security will require REAL IDs for access to federal facilities and domestic flights. Residents can obtain a REAL ID from Illinois Secretary of State facilities by providing necessary documentation such as proof of identity and residency.

On another front, House Democrats have introduced legislation affecting homeschooling families, which Leader McCombie opposes through HB2827. She encourages residents to oppose what she describes as intrusive mandates on parental rights concerning education choices.

Leader McCombie also announced her office hours scheduled for Friday, inviting residents across northwest Illinois to engage with her office directly.
