The Illinois Christian Home Educators (ICHE) are set to hold their 35th annual "Cherry Pie Day" at the Capitol in Springfield on Thursday, March 6. This event serves as a day of awareness for homeschool families across the state. Participants will gather at the State Capitol to distribute pies to legislators, reminding them of the continued importance of homeschooling in Illinois. Senator Andrew Chesney expressed his support for homeschooling and opposition to legislative efforts that could interfere with educational autonomy.

A recent audit by the Auditor General has revealed significant issues within Governor JB Pritzker's healthcare program for undocumented immigrants. The report highlighted mismanagement, including thousands of ineligible enrollees and costs nearly three times higher than projected. Republicans have criticized this program, emphasizing its wastefulness and lack of oversight. Senate Bill 1699 aims to increase transparency by requiring detailed annual reports on taxpayer-funded programs for migrants.

An IPASS on Demand event is scheduled for March 10 in Oregon, co-hosted by Mayor Ken Williams. Attendees can switch their plastic IPASS transponders for new sticker technology without any fees.

College students recently visited Springfield for a lobby day focused on higher education issues. Senator Chesney appreciated seeing young people engaged in state government.

Senate Republicans continue advocating for property tax relief, particularly for seniors and low-income families. Proposals include raising income eligibility for exemptions and making tax credits refundable.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is accepting applications until April 14 for Volunteer Fire Assistance grants aimed at strengthening rural fire departments. These grants cover up to 50% of project costs, with a maximum reimbursement of $10,000.
