State Senator Andrew S. Chesney | Illinois General Assembly
Illinois State Senator Andrew Chesney has introduced legislation aimed at increasing transparency regarding taxpayer spending on programs for non-citizens. Senate Bill 1699, which Chesney co-sponsors, mandates annual reports detailing state expenditures on migrant and illegal immigrant services. The bill requires the Illinois Department of Human Services to work with other agencies to submit a report to the General Assembly that includes information on total spending, appropriations, impacted families, funding sources, and awarded contracts.
Chesney expressed concerns over unchecked spending by Governor JB Pritzker's administration on non-citizen programs, stating that since taking office, Pritzker has increased such spending from a few million dollars to over $1 billion annually. Chesney emphasized the need for accountability as Illinois faces a significant budget deficit.
In related developments, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Illinois over its sanctuary laws, accusing state leaders of hindering federal immigration enforcement efforts. The lawsuit targets policies like the TRUST Act, which limits local law enforcement's collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). "Today’s Department of Justice lawsuit against the State of Illinois is a direct result of Governor JB Pritzker’s reckless and dangerous policies," Chesney stated in response.
Additionally, Senator Chesney is seeking closure for families affected by Jackson Kradle's death in July 2024. He requested that the State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor review case evidence after it was ruled a homicide earlier this year. The investigation had been transferred due to potential conflicts involving local authorities.
On education matters, Chesney criticized House Bill 2827 filed by three House Democrats that imposes new regulations on homeschooling families. As an advocate for educational freedom and school choice, he opposes measures he believes undermine parental rights in education decisions.
Lastly, Illinois taxpayers are reminded by the state's Department of Revenue to claim available tax credits when filing their 2024 returns. Key credits include the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC), Volunteer Emergency Worker Credit (VEW), Education Expense Credit, and Property Tax Credit.
