Thousands of homeschooling families gathered at the Illinois State Capitol to voice their opposition to House Bill 2827. The bill, which passed the Education Policy Committee with an 8-4 vote, would introduce new regulations for homeschooling, such as mandatory forms and educational portfolios. Opponents argue it infringes on parental rights and autonomy in education.

"There is a large, thriving homeschool community in the 45th District," said Senator Andrew Chesney. "I want to thank them for engaging on this issue and letting lawmakers know they do not want or need government interference with their choices regarding their kids’ educations. I will never support legislation that restricts parents’ ability to make autonomous educational decisions on behalf of their children."

Senator Chesney also expressed his disapproval of Senate Bill 1872, which proposes a ban on plastic shopping bags and introduces a fee of at least 10 cents per paper bag. He criticized the bill for adding financial strain to families already coping with inflation.

"Families are already struggling with rising food, gas, and utility costs—now Springfield wants to make it even harder to put food on the table," he stated.

In another development, Senator Chesney highlighted a recent letter sent by Republican lawmakers to the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). The letter seeks clarity on how IHSA plans to comply with federal directives following President Trump's executive order prohibiting biological males from participating in women's high school sports.

The executive order emphasizes maintaining fairness in athletics by aligning participation policies based on birth sex rather than gender identity. Senator Chesney referenced Lia Thomas's case, noting ongoing debates about inclusivity in sports.

"I look forward to the IHSA’s response on this important issue," he concluded.

Additionally, a reminder was issued for the upcoming Right to Life March scheduled for March 25 in Springfield. Participants are encouraged to attend the rally outside the Illinois State Capitol and engage with lawmakers afterward.
