House Minority Leader Tony McCombie has successfully passed two pieces of legislation in the Illinois House aimed at addressing Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) management concerns. The bills, having received unanimous approval from the Agriculture & Conservation Committee, also garnered bipartisan support in the House.
McCombie highlighted the local impact of agency sharpshooting used to test deer populations in northern Illinois. "The use of agency sharpshooting to test the deer population has taken a toll in northern Illinois," said McCombie. "These bills present a step forward, one that was inspired by the significant input I received from constituents."
CWD was first detected in a Boone County deer in 2002, and state efforts to manage the disease have since affected residents in McCombie's northwest Illinois district. McCombie sought public input through surveys and community outreach, leading to the January filing of the legislative package to devise state-based solutions.
House Bills 2339 and 2340 will now proceed to the Senate for further deliberation. Residents interested in tracking the progress of these bills can visit ilga.gov for updates.
