Illinois is witnessing a contentious debate over proposed tax hikes as Governor JB Pritzker and Democrats in Springfield push for a $6 billion increase to fund government expansion. This move would create the largest state budget in Illinois history, raising concerns among Republicans about the state's already high tax burden.

The American Legislative Exchange Council's "Rich States, Poor States" 2025 report ranks Illinois near the bottom for economic growth policies. The report considers factors like tax rates, minimum wage, and public employee numbers. Only Vermont and New York scored worse than Illinois.

Republicans warn that new taxes could drive up costs, discourage investment, and impact family-owned farms negatively. They also oppose plans to expand benefits for individuals in the U.S. illegally.

Meanwhile, Governor Pritzker is on a national tour to elevate his political profile amidst criticism from Senate Republicans who argue he should focus on local economic challenges instead of national appearances.

In legislative developments, Senator Andrew Chesney co-sponsored Senate Bill 710 to address deer overpopulation affecting farmers. The bill passed unanimously in the Senate and aims to streamline permits for deer harvesting.

Senate Bill 1773 seeks stricter regulation of xylazine, a synthetic drug linked to rising overdose cases. It has been passed by the Senate and moves to the House next.

A memorial ceremony took place at the Illinois State Capitol honoring fallen police officers and K-9 partners. Nine officers will have their names added to a monument recognizing their sacrifice.

Senator Chesney is also involved in community initiatives like a pet food drive with the Northwest Illinois Alliance of Realtors benefiting Friends Forever Humane Society in Freeport until May 16.

Additionally, a document shredding event co-hosted by Chesney will occur on May 10 at Machesney Park Town Center for safe destruction of sensitive documents.
