State Senator Li Arellano Jr. has announced the allocation of nearly $3.34 million from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) to support pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure projects in the 37th Senate District.

“Investing in safe, modern infrastructure is critical to both quality of life and long-term economic development,” said Senator Arellano. “These projects are more than just paths, they’re investments in the future of our communities. I’m proud to see state dollars going directly into projects that improve daily life for residents and connect people to the places they live, work, and learn.”

Two specific projects within the district have been awarded funding for 2025:

The Village of Walnut will receive $357,144 for its Main Street Multi-Use Path Project. This project aims to replace two disconnected sidewalks and bike paths with a new, continuous 10-foot-wide multi-use path along Main Street from north of 2nd Street to Walnut Street.

The City of Mendota has been granted $3,000,000 for constructing a 1.9-mile shared-use path for bicycles and pedestrians. This concrete path will extend from north of the Amtrak Depot to Lake Kakusha and Mendota High School at the city's northwestern edge.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, project selections were based on construction readiness, connection to existing transportation infrastructure, and potential for economic development.

ITEP is a statewide initiative designed to enhance walking and biking infrastructure while improving access, safety, and sustainability across Illinois communities.
