Li Arellano Jr., a state senator representing Illinois' 37th District, expressed hope that the assassination of Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, along with the shootings of Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and his wife, would prompt community discussions aimed at ending violence and empowering residents.

"Early this morning around 3:30am, two sitting members of the Minnesota legislature and their spouses were shot in their homes by an assassin posing as a police officer," said Arellano, State Senator 37th District (R), according to Facebook. "State Rep Melissa Hortman, who just stepped back as Minnesota Speaker, and her husband have both died. Just a few miles away, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were found by the police and both rushed into surgery. I pray, hope, and work towards community discourse that empowers people while completely eliminating violence."

Melissa Hortman, a Minnesota state representative and former House speaker, and her husband, Mark, were fatally shot in the early hours of June 14. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also shot but survived after undergoing extensive surgery. The assailant was identified as Vance Luther Boetler, who was dressed as a police officer and wore a realistic-looking latex mask during the attack. According to an ABC News report, Boetler had a list of targets that included Democratic legislators, abortion providers, and pro-choice activists. He was shot by police while fleeing the scene on foot.

Boetler was apprehended on June 15 near his farm in Green Isle, Minnesota. He faces charges from the state for two counts of second-degree murder—charges prosecutors aim to elevate to first-degree murder—and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Justice has charged him with six federal counts; one charge—murder through the use of a firearm—could result in a life sentence or the death penalty if pursued by prosecutors. Boetler's initial federal court appearance took place on June 16, with another scheduled for June 27.

The Associated Press reports that police discovered notebooks containing plans and lists from internet-based people search engines in Boetler’s vehicle but have yet to determine his motive.
