Democratic lawmakers in Illinois have approved a new budget that includes nearly $1 billion in additional tax hikes, despite the state collecting a record $54 billion in tax revenue last year. Republican lawmakers have criticized the spending plan, citing concerns over what they describe as a serious spending problem in Springfield.

Senator Andrew Chesney expressed concern over the state's financial management, questioning whether residents' incomes have increased proportionally with government spending under Governor Pritzker, which has risen by 37% over the past six years. "Has your family’s income grown by 37% over the last six years? Of course not," Chesney stated.

The spring legislative session saw several tax proposals that did not make it into the final budget but remain under consideration. These include a delivery tax on items such as groceries and baby formula, taxes on everyday services like car repairs or haircuts, and a digital ad tax targeting small businesses. Chesney urged for responsible budgeting from Governor Pritzker and his Democratic allies to protect taxpayers.

In other news, Senator Chesney hosted a Summer Agriculture Advisory Committee meeting in Freeport. The meeting featured Chris Davis from the Illinois Farm Bureau as guest speaker and was chaired by Lou Lamoreux. The committee meets two to three times annually to discuss issues affecting farmers and agriculture in Northwest Illinois.

Chesney emphasized agriculture's role as an economic driver in Illinois: "Agriculture is the top economic driver in the State of Illinois." He acknowledged committee members for their contributions to discussions impacting farms and agribusinesses within his district.

Additionally, changes to the Illinois General Assembly website were highlighted. A major update launched on July 1 aims to improve user experience with a modern layout while introducing changes affecting public engagement with legislative processes. The site now offers guidance on submitting witness slips—a tool for expressing support or opposition to bills being heard in committee.

"Submitting a witness slip is one of the easiest and most effective ways to make your voice heard in Springfield," Chesney noted. Senate Republicans have released a video walkthrough assisting constituents with navigating this updated process on www.ilga.gov.
