Senator Andrew Chesney has filed a resolution urging Governor Pritzker to participate in a federal school choice tax credit program. The program, part of President Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill," is similar to the Illinois Invest in Kids Tax Credit Scholarship Program that was dismantled in 2023. Chesney stated, "Back in 2023, I was a vocal advocate for the continuation and expansion of the Illinois Invest in Kids Tax Credit Scholarship Program." He added that the federal program would not cost Illinois anything, but Governor Pritzker has been hesitant to opt-in.
Chesney emphasized the benefits of the new federal tax credit program, which allows individuals to receive a 100% federal tax credit for donations to certified Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs). These organizations assist families with private school tuition and other educational expenses. Chesney noted, "There is absolutely no downside to this program."
In addition to his legislative efforts, Senator Chesney is promoting his Summer Reading Program for students entering first through sixth grade. Participants are encouraged to read eight books over the summer and submit completed forms by August 13, 2025. Successful participants will receive an official certificate from the Illinois Senate and an invitation to an ice cream party.
Furthermore, a report by Truth in Accounting has ranked Illinois last among all states for financial transparency. The state's delay in publishing its fiscal year 2023 Annual Comprehensive Financial Reports contributed to this ranking. According to researchers, timely financial reporting is crucial for maintaining public trust and making informed budgetary decisions.
Chesney criticized Illinois Democrats' handling of financial transparency issues: "This report is yet another reminder of Illinois Democrats’ inability to provide basic transparency to taxpayers."
