August 1st marks Sweet Corn Day in Savanna, and residents are encouraged to prepare for the annual event. Meanwhile, discussions around education in Illinois continue as a new federal tax law offers a chance to revive the "Invest in Kids" program. This initiative allowed taxpayers to make tax-free donations to private school fundraising groups, providing scholarships for students. The Chicago Tribune has urged state leaders to adopt the new provisions of the Trump tax law, with House Republicans backing this move.

In other news, Illinois State Police recently graduated its largest cadet class in 25 years. These newly sworn troopers will join regional locations across the state. The recruitment process includes traditional cadet training and an accelerated program for experienced officers.

On the economic front, Illinois' unemployment rate dropped to 4.6% in June, marking the first decrease since February and reaching its lowest point since August 2023. Despite this improvement, it remains higher than the national rate of 4.1%.

State Representative Tony McCombie expressed support for these developments: “Republicans stood up for a scholarship program called ‘Invest in Kids’ because it worked...House Republicans believe safe communities start with strong support for law enforcement.”

Looking ahead, seven county fairs are scheduled soon.
