The Ogle County Jail has housed 43 non-U.S. citizens with detainer holds since July 1, 2021, according to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by NW Illinois News.
According to data from the Ogle County Sheriff's Office, the records include names, booking dates, and countries of origin. The public records request was made for "a list of all illegal aliens who have spent at least one night in your jail since July 1, 2021."
Several individuals listed in the FOIA response were from Mexico, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and Thailand. Booking durations ranged from a few days to several months. One detainee, Jorge Luis Maquis-Lopez, was held from July 15 to August 12, 2021.
The FOIA response did not include a total taxpayer cost for housing these detainees, nor did it confirm Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer status beyond country of origin and dates held. Some detainees were listed with their country of origin marked as "Unknown."
The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office is led by Sheriff Brian E. VanVickle and serves as the principal law enforcement agency in Ogle County, Illinois. The office oversees patrols, criminal investigations, court/security duties, and corrections including management of the county jail.
