The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is preparing for the upcoming winter season by recruiting temporary workers through its annual Snowbird program. The initiative aims to ensure that over 45,000 lane miles are kept safe and clear during snow and ice conditions.
Positions available include full-time temporary Winter Salaried Highway Maintainers, with a starting monthly pay of $6,044, and hourly Snow Removal Operators, who will earn $27.79 per hour. Applicants are required to have a valid Class A or B commercial driver’s license with the appropriate endorsements and no airbrake restrictions. Candidates must also pass a physical exam, vision test, drug and alcohol screening, and background check. IDOT encourages veterans to apply for these roles.
Openings can be searched by county, but those interested are advised to apply promptly as postings are removed once positions in each area are filled.
Further details about job openings, requirements, and the application process can be found on the IDOT website at illinois.gov.
Arellano, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 2025 to represent the state's 37th Senate District, replacing previous state senator Win Stoller.
