State Senator Andrew Chesney has criticized Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara’s recent statements supporting the city’s policy of not cooperating with federal immigration authorities. McNamara reaffirmed on social media that Rockford would continue to support undocumented immigrants and decline collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In response, Chesney issued a statement: “Every elected official at every level of government has a responsibility to uphold the rule of law. Yet Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara has chosen to walk in lockstep with Chicago’s radical leadership, following the failed and dangerous playbook of Mayor Brandon Johnson.
“By refusing to cooperate with ICE, Mayor McNamara is importing Chicago’s lawlessness into Rockford. He is mimicking the reckless sanctuary city policies that have made Chicago a national symbol of violent crime, political dysfunction, and disregard for public safety. Instead of standing with the overwhelming majority of his constituents who want a safe community and law and order, McNamara has chosen to stand with illegal immigrants, many of whom break our laws and endanger our communities.”
Chesney also addressed a new federal lawsuit challenging Illinois’ policy on financial aid for undocumented students. The lawsuit targets House Bill 460, signed by Governor JB Pritzker earlier this year, which expands state scholarships and grants to include undocumented immigrants starting next year. Chesney voted against the bill when it was before the Senate in May.
The U.S. Department of Justice filed suit against Illinois, Governor Pritzker, and Attorney General Kwame Raoul last week. The suit argues that offering taxpayer-funded financial aid and in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants violates federal statutes by providing benefits not equally available to all U.S. citizens. Federal officials claim this policy discriminates against out-of-state students who are legally present but do not receive similar financial assistance.
According to Chesney, “This latest lawsuit is further proof that Governor Pritzker’s policies are putting the interests of those here illegally ahead of hardworking Illinois families. I believe taxpayer-funded financial aid should be reserved for U.S. citizens and legal residents, not used to create additional incentives for illegal immigration.”
In other news from his office, Chesney announced he will host another IPASS on Demand event in his district. On October 7 at Galena City Hall from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, representatives from the Illinois Tollway will assist residents with switching over to new sticker technology for their IPASS accounts. The event aims to help users transfer their accounts without disruption or deposit loss; attendees are advised to bring their current transponders and license plate numbers.
Chesney was elected as a Republican State Senator representing Illinois’ 45th District in 2023 after succeeding Brian Stewart.
