To mark the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, members of the Office of the House Minority Leader participated in the annual Blue Mass held in Shannon. The event is organized by the St. Wendelin Knights of Columbus council #12841 and has been a local tradition since 2002.

The Blue Mass serves as both a memorial for those who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks and as an occasion to honor public safety workers who continue to serve their communities. Organizers say it is meant to ensure that “those that will never be forgotten” are remembered each year.

Illinois State Rep. Tony McCombie (R-Savanna), a Republican elected in 2023 to represent the state’s 89th House District after succeeding Andrew Chesney, is among those whose office attended this year’s ceremony.

Since its inception, the Blue Mass has brought together community members and public servants in Shannon to reflect on sacrifice and service.
