Legislation has been introduced in the Illinois Senate to establish “Charlie Kirk Day” on September 10 each year. The bill, known as Senate Bill 2694, seeks to amend the State Commemorative Dates Act to honor Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, following his assassination.

Kirk was shot and killed on September 10, 2025, while preparing to speak at Utah Valley University. Authorities have charged Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old from Utah, with his murder.

The proposed day of recognition is intended for Illinois residents to reflect on Kirk’s values and contributions. According to the bill’s sponsors, it will also serve as a reminder of the importance of protecting constitutional rights. “By establishing a day of recognition, Illinoisans will have a chance each year to reflect on Kirk’s values, his contributions to public discourse, and the continuing importance of protecting our constitutional rights.” SB 2694 has been filed with the Illinois General Assembly and is awaiting committee assignment.

In other news from Senator Andrew Chesney’s office, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is now accepting applications for Illinois Harvest Permits (IHPs). These permits allow farmers and agricultural haulers to transport crops more efficiently during harvest season by permitting an additional 10 percent weight per load. The IHPs are available through IDOT’s online permit system and are valid from September 1 through December 31. This initiative aims to reduce transportation costs and logistical delays for one of the nation’s leading producers of corn and soybeans. IDOT requires route authorization every two weeks during this period to protect infrastructure.

Senator Chesney also announced that Galena City Hall will host an IPASS on Demand event on October 7 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Representatives from the Illinois Tollway will assist attendees with transitioning to new sticker technology for toll payments and address account-related questions. The new sticker tags can be used within a day of activation across both Illinois tollways and E-Z Pass roadways in other states.

Additionally, families are invited to participate in the annual Veterans Day Wall of Honor display at the Statehouse between October 28 and November 13. Submissions including photos and stories about veterans are being accepted until October 24 via email or mail for inclusion in the electronic memorial.

Chesney has represented Illinois’ 45th Senate District since being elected in 2023 after succeeding Brian Stewart.
