Applications are now being accepted for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which provides financial help to eligible households in Illinois for utility services such as natural gas, propane, and electricity. The program issues one-time payments directly to energy providers on behalf of qualifying recipients.
The application period is open until August 15, 2026, or until available funds are depleted. This year, LIHEAP will distribute $240 million to assist families with their utility bills and furnace needs.
Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie has encouraged residents who need help managing energy costs to consider applying for LIHEAP. "Last year alone, LIHEAP provided critical support to 341,303 Illinois households, offering an average benefit of $686 per home between October 2024 and August 2025. This assistance helped ease the burden of heating and cooling expenses for families across the state," McCombie said.
McCombie also highlighted the importance of early application as colder weather approaches: "Leader McCombie emphasized the importance of applying early and encouraged eligible residents to take advantage of the program as colder months approach."
Priority will be given to families with the greatest need. Information about income eligibility is available on the program's webpage. Applications can be submitted through the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) website or at local agencies. Assistance is also available by calling 1-833-711-0374.
McCombie was elected in 2023 as a Republican representative for Illinois' 89th House District, succeeding Andrew Chesney.
