Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie recently visited the Galena High School Trapshooting Team to present a scholarship on behalf of the Illinois Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus. The Caucus is a bipartisan and bicameral group focused on promoting hunting, fishing, conservation, and outdoor recreation in Illinois.

McCombie met with team members during their practice at the Scales Mound Gun Club in Schapville. She recognized the students for their dedication to teamwork, safety, and skill development.

“Participation in extracurricular activities is vital to student growth, and trapshooting is an impressive sport that teaches responsibility, precision, and respect for firearms,” said McCombie. “I’m proud to support these students and the lessons they are learning both on and off the range.”

The Galena High School Trapshooting Team was established in 2020. Since its inception, it has gained popularity among students. Scholarships and donations from organizations have helped make participation more affordable for students and families during both spring and fall seasons.

Firearm sports such as trapshooting contribute to preserving Illinois’ outdoor traditions while also providing firearm safety education. Programs like this allow young athletes to gain practical experience that promotes discipline, sportsmanship, and responsible gun ownership.

The Illinois Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus includes members from both parties and chambers of the General Assembly. Its mission is to protect hunters’ and anglers’ rights while supporting conservation efforts and increasing youth participation in outdoor activities.

A significant part of the Caucus’s community support comes through its scholarship program. Funds raised at events are directed back into schools and youth programs across Illinois each year, helping teams such as fishing or trapshooting cover costs associated with participation.

Leader McCombie offered congratulations to the Galena High School Trapshooting Team for their achievements. She expressed her pride in supporting them through her work with the Illinois Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus.

McCombie was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 89th House District in 2023 after Andrew Chesney previously held the seat.
