After Stacy Davis Gates, the head of the Chicago Teachers Union, was elected president of the Illinois Federation of Teachers, Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie released a statement expressing concerns about Gates’ leadership and its impact on education in the state.

“Stacy Davis Gates is bad news for Illinois students. Gates is a left-wing radical who runs Local 1 like a corrupt political machine instead of a force for student achievement and educational excellence. Under her leadership, CTU political spending has skyrocketed while educational outcomes of Chicago Public Schools have deteriorated. We cannot allow Gates to export her far left Chicago agenda to suburban and downstate school districts. House Republicans remain focused on getting politics out of the classroom, empowering parents, and improving educational opportunities for Illinois families,” McCombie stated.

McCombie, a Republican, was elected to represent Illinois’ 89th House District in 2023 after succeeding Andrew Chesney.
